Princess Haya to steer revamp of Dubai Healthcare City

HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein is set to lead an overhaul of Dubai Healthcare City in a bid to steer attract fresh healthcare brands to the free zone and capture a slice of the lucrative medical tourism market.
Princess Haya, the wife of Dubai’s ruler, will oversee a restructuring aimed at shifting DHCC’s focus away from real estate and back to healthcare, her office said in an emailed statement.
The revamp will ensure “real estate would be a component that complements [DHCC’s] sustainability, but is never at the heart of its operation,” the statement said.
All existing projects in the development are under evaluation, and DHCC is in talks with a number of medical institutions to bring the project in line with its new focus, the statement said.

Dubai College induction sessions praised

DUBAI // As Barney Holt strolled the corridors of his new school with his parents, he touched every sculpture, stared at wall charts and took the front seat for introductions of teachers who will educate him every day for the next few years.
A Year 7 pupil at Dubai College this year, Barney, 11, tried on his uniform and met classmates and senior pupils a few days before the full rigour of classes began.
"It's really good to be here," he said. "Look at all the features, the basketball court - they even have cricket and rugby."
Barney was one of 130 pupils touring the campus on Thursday before starting lessons today.
"Coming in before the school year begins to meet up with the teachers and classmates reduces the pressure of the first day a bit," he said.
The session included activities for parents and pupils, who were guided by older students to different departments and classes.
The guides answered queries from the curious newcomers, trying to put the nervous group at ease with humour and small talk.

David Cameron urges Eton to set up state school

David Cameron wants his old school Eton College to set up a school in the state sector, the BBC has learned.
Representatives of top public schools met the prime minister and Education Secretary Michael Gove on Thursday in Downing Street to discuss the issue.
Mr Cameron said he wanted all private schools to see how they could help drive up standards.
Eton head teacher Tony Little has said the school is looking at greater involvement in state education.
He told the BBC that Eton had close relations with local state schools and was examining "several possible routes" for greater involvement and "ruled nothing out".

Brush up on tooth truth

Getting children to clean teeth properly is an uphill task. The business of brushing begins by choosing a decent toothbrush. This is the easy part. Vying for attention, most oral-care brands have flooded the market with products, leaving children spoilt for choice. Every cartoon character worth its fame, from princesses to superheroes, help kids manually keep teeth clean.
But it's the age of gadgets; conventional practices must make way for high-tech methods, and it appears even children's teeth aren't safe, with Philips launching their Sonicare for Kids, the first electric toothbrush for children aged 4-10. The Dh400 toothbrush has smaller brushheads and musical timers to tell the child when to move around to a different part of the mouth. "Dental professionals are looking for ways to empower parents to instill effective brushing habits in their children for superior results in at-home dental care," says Vincenzo Ventricelli, marketing director at Philips Consumer Lifestyle, Middle East and Africa.

Mind-mapping: a great learning tool for all ages

I decide to begin my interview with Tony Buzan with a tricky question.

"Do you remember the first book you wrote?" I ask him.

When a mind-mapping guru has written 122 books ("and counting"), is 69 years old, caught up in a whirlwind tour of the UAE, in between meetings with the organisers of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature to discuss his next appearance for the event, among many other things, it is likely that such a question would make him pause, even if just for a second.

But Buzan doesn't. Instead he shoots back, "Yes, I do.

Teacher's 60,000km hard drive to bring laptops to rural Africa

DUBAI // Bouncing over rugged terrain in a four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with solar panels, a tent and a fridge, Tamin-Lee Connolly has begun her mission to deliver solar-powered laptops to children in rural Africa.
The punishing landscape is just one of the challenges for the Dubai-based geography teacher. Ms Connolly, 31, is also visiting schools to identify potential problems before the 5,000 laptops are delivered.
Her journey has taken her to Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania over the past month, which has helped her gain a broader understanding of the requirements on the ground.
"It is important to see first-hand what works and what doesn't," said Ms Connolly, who since the end of July has logged more than 8,000 kilometres in a Toyota Land Cruiser nicknamed Maggie, short for the Swahili word Magurudumu, or wheels.
It is part of her 60,000km, year-long African tour to help deliver laptops to schoolchildren in Burundi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Namibia, Ethiopia, Ghana and Morocco.
"I have noticed that a major asset that these villages need are inverters for the solar panels," she said. "There is enough energy coming through the solar panels, but they don't have enough inverters with enough plugs to charge up the laptops."
