Scuba Diving for Kids

If you’re looking to keep active and cool over the next few months, then diving is one of the few outdoorsy pursuits left to enjoy. Once the sole (geddit!) domain of adrenaline junkies, more and more youngsters are now taking up the sport and, says Paul Sant, Master Instructor at Divers Down in Fujairah, it’s a hobby that will last a lifetime.

School Regeneration - USA

This summer, work has begun on transforming a 10-storey, 20,000 sq m former industrial building, adjacent to the High Line park in Manhattan, into the first flagship for Avenues – a school company that over the next decade will open 20 or more locations globally.

Best in Class

While some countries struggle to adopt an enlightened policy to school design, innovative architects around the globe are demonstrating that a healthy learning environment with plenty of light and natural materials means happier children and long-term economic benefits.

Education is the best asset to invest in

You would not trust your health to a doctor who is not qualified, so why should you trust your wealth to someone without proper professional training? Trust is paramount in any investment relationship but it has taken a battering lately.
In a recent survey of investment professionals undertaken by CFA (chartered financial analyst) Societies around the GCC and Middle East, over half of respondents believe that trust in the investment industry has diminished since the recent financial crisis. Perhaps not surprisingly, in response to that erosion of trust, the demand for professional qualifications has risen from both employers and their employees.
If this reflects an attempt to regain trust by the investment community, then it is a welcome trend.

Top marks for behaviour programme

SHARJAH // A programme that aims to prevent bad behaviour in schools such as smoking, truancy, fighting and dropping out is being expanded.
Sharjah Police and the Sharjah Education Council yesterday agreed to increase the number of schools participating in their security culture programme from 21 last year to 50 this year.
"The number of students benefiting from this security programme would also go up from 9,000 students last year to 25,000 this year," said Brig Gen Humaid Mohammed Al Hudaidi, the director general of Sharjah Police. "We intend to expand this programme to almost every child in the emirate."
He said the programme would create a generation capable of co-operation to achieve community goals such as fewer accidents and crimes.
Dr Abdullah Saleh Al Suweih, the director of the Education Council, said that police last year held 166 lectures in schools on 41 topics.
"What was done last year was mostly a success," he said. "We want to focus on prevention rather than cure," he said.

University to offer first business PhD in UAE

DUBAI // The popularity of business courses provides many of Dubai's universities with a problem: nowhere in the UAE offers PhD programmes to develop lecturers.
The University of Dubai hopes to change that and has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Higher Education to offer business PhDs.
About 10,000 students - most of them Emirati - have graduated from the university since it was set up in 1997 by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce. It now offers dozens of MBA and undergraduate degrees.
But as the institution has expanded it has felt an increasing need for home-grown academics, especially, says the university's president, in the areas of finance and accounting.
